What is the best hair dye to buy out of the box?help..?

Im currently looking to dye my hair a little lighter. Its light brown now on top and some blonde on the bottom cause its grown out and looks horrible. I want to dye my hair a lighter color all around like a dark blonde kinda. I want a permant color that wont wash out and something that will turn it lighter and not darker. Last time i tried dying it like 6 months ago i tried dying it blonde and it turned dark. Whats the best hair dye that will dye it a lighter color....
l'oreal is good because it takes to hair easily.
Garnier is also good because it's a dye that is good for your hair (more healthy then others) but it tends to fade a bit compared to others.
