hey guys
i apologise for what is undoubtably a dumb newbie question! :o i have searched the forums i really have! and read the help files, and looked through every dialog i can find. i've even read some threads! ;)
after every reboot, whenever i start up an application needing net access, i have to give permission every time. the permissions for all my applications are showing in Options/Application/Trusted Application just fine every time, but soon as i start my ISP or browser up etc i have to click the always allow button on the taskbar popup. Welcome to the forums Sepher,
Which application is giving this trouble and what rules have you created for it? If you are new to Outpost, then have a look at 1 for a good introduction.
One thing to watch out for with Outpost Free is that if it crashes, it will wipe your configuration (so if this is happening every time, then this could be why rules are being lost). To mitigate this, keep a regularly updated copy of the .cfg configuration file that you can restore from. running AOL 7, which dies every hour or so at peak times, and takes as much as it can down with it! :rolleyes:It always surprises me why AOL provides such a problem client while targetting newer users - maybe they figure the more savvy ones will jump ship sooner? Other issues I've heard about AOL include heavy memory consumption and the TopSpeed component (which recompresses webpage graphics to make them load faster) leaving a port open on your PC (you need to use Outpost to restrict its incoming connections from AOL servers only to avoid this). Good luck if you decide to persevere with them. :) ROCK and ROLL Saxophone Style:: 15 posts - 8 authors - Last post: Feb 22, 2006In my own mind I believe it's primarily liberal use of pentatonics and effects The reason I ask is because I cannot seem to get rock and roll lines to come out of my horn. lololol oh don't get me started on AOL crashes! ;)
running AOL 7, which dies every hour or so at peak times, and takes as much as it can down with it! AOL 8 is worse, and AOL 9 just doesn't wanna know on my PC! suspect it's line noise and a dodgy winmodem, which is bone idle on my part cos i have a hardware modem in the PC downstairs, and i just can't be bothered getting the screwdrivers out and downloading drivers! i'll get round to it at some point. :)
i run spybot / adaware / AVG / regcleaner / firewall stuff / etc etc, and have Firefox and Opera set up to block most of the rubbish, so it's just yer typical AOL dial-up nonsense! the PC's clean as i can get it i reckon, but cheers for the AumHa link. not come across that one.
cheers for the help again. much appreciated! :)
neil ;)
paranoid2000 cheers for the reply!
yep it's a crash problem then! when aol dies it takes my entire pc down with it. crashes everything running and it's a hit reset button thing!
it's not a major problem, cos i only have 3 or 4 applications needing inet access. just thought it was me being dumb! ;)
thanks
neil
If AOL is that unstable on your system (which version are you using?), it may be due to unwanted adware/spyware on your system. Check the AumHa Parasite Fight! (http://aumha.org/a/parasite.php) page for details on checking for and removing such software.
Aside from that, the advice on keeping a backed-up copy of your Outpost configuration after any major changes would seem critical in your case. Outpost v2 is far better in this regard (changes are written to file immediately and it doesn't wipe the file if it crashes).
