Nikon D3/ ISO 25,600
Published by: wktd 2010-03-20

  • Has anybody bought or tested the new D3 yet? When I read about ISO 25,600 in Popular Photography I honestly thought it was a typo. I would Love to see test shots at that high of an ISO, especially because its not a full frame sensor, so it will naturally have more noise. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Not that i could be converted from Canon anyway.

  • Lots of Nikon cameras don't go to ISO 100. It is quite common. In the current Nikon range, the D40 doesn't, as well as a bunch of others in the Nikon line. The D100 didn't, D70 didn't, D50 didn't, just to name a few. The difference is that the others didn't have the "Lo-1" setting on them, if I recall correctly, so you couldn't set them lower. I may be wrong on this, but I don't think so. The D40x has a 100 ISO where the D40 doesn't... but it doesn't have the same kicking 1/500th sync speed that I LOVE.

I use my D40 to take football pictures so I can use the higher sync speed... yes, on the D80 you can FP the sync with a SB-800 or SB-600 (you can't do that on the D40), but FP'ing reduces the power and I need all the flash I can get in these horribly lit fields.

  • ah, i coulda sworn they weren't full frame. i did, and wow. i expected to see noise with an outline of a picture, lol. but it was much better than i expected it to be. still probably un-usable though.

  • yeah, yeah, yeah, ISO 300,000...Remind me to bring a D3 to my upcoming trip to outer space.

But can it shoot at ISO 100 in mid afternoon?
    Nope.
Stock up on ND filters, Nikonians.

    :D

Sorry to disappoint you, but yes it can. There is a built in electronic circuit that takes it to ISO 100, that doesn't degrade the already spectacular image quality.

Quoting directly from NikonUSA's website: Extreme Low-noise ISO range with Advanced Noise Reduction enables photographers to confidently select from 200-6400 ISO with an expanded range that includes Lo-1 (100 ISO)Hi-1 (12,800 ISO) and Hi-2 (25,600 ISO)

That information page is available HERE (clicky) (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25434).

They just call it Lo-1 because "technically" it isn't strictly sensor sensitivity, it is image processing... but it is non-destructive.

  • Even my "obsolete" D1X only goes to ISO 125. The D3's "native" minimum sensitivity is ISO 200. That simply means that the sensor without any hardware amplification is 200. It was not long ago that MF digital backs were stuck at ISO 25, or 50. I would imagine as 5th gen DSLR's come on line the min ISO will go up and so will max. ISO. And ya, maybe you will have a 3,000,000 ISO for that trip to Pluto you have planned in 2108.

  • Oh, come on...I was just poking fun at you guys. I'm not a "brand-washed" consumer.
Just seemed odd, that the range moved from 100 to 200 upwards.

Does anyone know why this is? Is one chip not able to be of high sensitivity, as well as of low?

I theorise it's something to do with the higher sensitivity in their sensor design but I haven't been able to actually prove it or confirm it. ISO100 may be some kind of a technical impossibility.

  • This iso 100 thing came up for 11tybillionth time only yesterday with my bestest Canon mate, I cant even see the problem, who needs iso 100...search me, d70 shutter is 1/8000th of a second + exposure bias -2 stops.....its like :banghead:

  • Not a typo. They are full frame.

  • yup.. its not a typo... and very impressive indeed.

    All I can say...

    Well its about time Nikon!

  • probably is unusable. But that's not the point. The point is ISO6400 is very usable and it isn't on nearly every other camera.

  • There are very few times I need ISO 100. 200 works just fine 99% of the time.

  • Nikons first full frame sensor, and they pwn everything out...
    Quite an impressive camera.

  • It is full frame. Google the web for D3 High ISO examples. You will be impressed.

  • It is not yet released to the general public. It comes out later this month.

  • I agree... given the choice between needing ISO 100 or needing a D3, I think I will choose the D3 and worry about the ISO 100 later.
