Macedonian man being "tested for bird flu"

SKOPJE, April 26 (Reuters) - A Macedonian admitted to hospital with fever is being tested for possible bird flu because he keeps pigeons, a source in the main state hospital in the capital Skopje said on Wednesday.
The man from the town of Strumica in southeastern Macedonia was in intensive care in the infectious diseases ward suffering from a high temperature and signs of pneumonia.

"We are doing a bird flu test on him," the source said. "The suspicion of bird flu only arises because the man keeps pigeons."
Results of the tests were expected on Thursday.
Macedonia has not had a confirmed case of bird flu in either wild fowl or poultry, but all its Balkan neighbours have announced the highly dangerous H5N1 strain of the avian virus is present in their territories.

  • Just a couple of days ago there were articles about how pigeons were not contagious.

Now, it appears that pigeons are suspected of infected a man with bird flu.

    Amazing isn't it.

  • So the Macedonian man died of "organ failure".Oddly enough,so do we all in the end.The more interesting thing is the question of WHY did this poor man's organs "fail"?And the non-disclosure of these details is so integral to my loss of faith in any official pronouncement.I thank all you flu-trackers who are continuing to ferret about looking for some truths in this whole sad saga.I'm not scared yet,but Damm! I like to be informed.

  • Hmmmm,

He was admitted Wednesday and died Thursday of pneumonia and organ failure.

Nope that doesn't sound like bird flu at all.

Give me a break. From The Influenza Report:In the first outbreak of avian influenza among humans in Hong Kong in 1997, one child died from influenza pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, Reye's syndrome, multiorgan failure, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (Claas 1998).

    ...

The only avian influenza strain to cause repeatedly severe disease in humans is the H5N1 serotype, first diagnosed in humans in Hong Kong in 1997 (CDC 1997, Yuen 1998). So far, the number of human cases has fortunately been relatively low (152 as of 23 January 2006), but the case-fatality rate is high (83/152) (WHO 2005). The clinical manifestations of influenza H5N1 infection in humans is not well-defined as current knowledge is based on the description of a few hospitalised patients. The spectrum ranges from asymptomatic infection (Katz 1999, Buxton Bridges 2000, Thorson 2006) to fatal pneumonitis and multiple organ failure.

The reports quoted a source from the hospital as saying that the [U]man showed symptoms of pneumonia and in high fever.

The man, who is from the town of Strumica in the southeastern Macedonia, keeps pigeons, the reports said.

The hospital will do the bird flu test on the man, and the result would come out on Thursday, according to local reports.

Well, this may be the end of the harmless pigeons theory!

A Macedonian man who was suspected of having contracted the bird flu virus died of organ failure on Thursday, but tests on him proved negative, news reports reaching in Tirana quoted a Macedonian hospital official as saying.
"All the tests carried out showed that he didn't have the avian flu virus," Zvonko Milenkovic, head of the infectious diseases ward at Skopje hospital, was quoted as saying.
"He died of organ failure," he added.
The man, who was from the town of Strumica in southeastern Macedonia, had been tested for bird flu virus infection because he had kept pigeons, reports said.
He showed the symptoms of pneumonia and had a high fever when he was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, Milenkovic said.
So far, no confirmed case of bird flu has been reported in wild fowl or domestic birds in Macedonia, although all its neighboring countries have been hit by the lethal strain of the H5N1 avian flu
