Depends on the family. In my husband's family, we all exchange X-mas gift lists, and his dad is so anal that he includes item numbers and pricing info on his list. It's extremely helpful, and I really appreciate it. Usually I simply have no clue what to get people as gifts, so the more info they provide the better. But this is between family members who are really close; I would be shocked to receive a gift list from someone I wasn't close to, and whom I wasn't planning buying a gift for. So it really depends on what the circumstances are. Rise to the Occasion::

People are getting so materialistic these days it's sickening. I sent a large check to a family wedding party and never even got a Thank You card for it. No one did in the family, but yet they still show up for Thanksgiving for dinner.
I see it all the time. Baby showers for the second or third child, registries for the second or third wedding. Really, come on! It's bad enough that they are getting married, but to ask for Christmas gifts in this economy, too? UGH!
Even if a wedding falls close to Christmas, the bride and groom should not expect Christmas gifts along with their wedding gifts.
And I would only give them a wedding gift, I can assure you.
I have certain family members that always ask for what we want. But this year, our wedding is two days after Christmas. We don't expect gifts, and probably won't be able to afford them for others, unfortunately.
That is completely and totally the opposite of class. It's one thing to send a list of suggestions, or a link to a registry. I think this country needs to start teaching gracious gift behavior in schools. It's horrifyingly improper to tell people exactly what to buy you without their asking. Since when did we become entitled to receive Christmas and wedding gifts? I would consider sending this couple a nice lump of coal.
It's hard to know what you are really asking in this question, because I see no problem in posting a christmas list anywhere. The individual family member gift list is definitely over the line. But I love when people have ongoing wish lists out on the web somewhere. I don't find it materialistic. They're not asking for it from a specific person just saying that this is what they would like. Because my favourite thing to do is go on their list on days that AREN'T holidays or their birthdays and buy them something special. :)

Wow....I think that might be one wedding/holiday I would be skipping with that particular couple. I bet they justify it by saying they know everyone is busy so they are just helping them by telling them exactly what to get. Amazing.
That's pretty ridiculous. I sent my Mom and sister an email of things I'd like for Christmas but only because they asked. A registry for a wedding is less out of line, but I've never heard of people assigning gifts to different people in the family. That's just obnoxious.
