i have to wear a tux for a school band concert.... what can i do to make it look cooler?
Get a real tux, e.g. Armani. The height of cool at the same time as being the height of propriety. Do you think a member of a performing artist's band where everyone wears a tux would disdain wearing one? Of course not!
Don't let your fear of wearing formal attire properly put you off. It is an important skill throughout adulthood. Get proper formal attire, learn how to wear it with aplomb. And make sure your shoes are polished! JANELL and ryans WEDDING!::

A) Stop being an idiot. You're being given a tuxedo, the best-looking item of men's clothing still in use. This is a good thing. You won't look stupid unless you screw it up by trying to make it look "cooler".
B)The only way to make a tuxedo look cooler is by making it more classic. Most guys will probably be idiots and wear clip-on bow ties. You, on the other hand, will learn to tie a bow tie, knowing that it looks better. Black silk self-tied, just like James Bond:

C)A lot of guys will wear awful modern vests, or no waist covering at all. You, on the other hand, will wear the vest at lower right, and look infinitely better:

D)A lot of guys will wear uncomfortable polyester-blend shirts with floppy little wing collars. You, on the other hand, will wear an all-cotton shirt with a turndown collar; again, just like James Bond:

F)If you have a pair of black lace-up shoes, polish them well and they should do fine.
Girls like tuxes...so that makes them cool....enough said.
But to answer your question, if you have to rent one yourself, chose a vest with a print on it - stripes or paisley. The higher breasted vest and jackets are more popular right now. (It buttons up higher than others). Cummerbund I hear are uncomfortable stay away from them. If you want to go for the old Hollywood movie star look - get a wing-tip collar w/ bow tie. (The collar stands up around the neck, but has little triangles that fold down right under your chin.) Stick w/ a white shirt. A few years ago it was "cool" to wear an all black tux, but not anymore. My brother's prom this year, most guys wore colored vest/ties. As far as the shoes go - get some w/ the toe not too rounded and not too pointed. Don't get a square toe either.
If you have to wear one the school picked...good luck! Maybe add a colored tie, vest, or pocket square (a/k/a handkerchief) if allowed. That's about all the flexibility you have. I guess you could wear your 'cool' shoes there and after it's over, but I bet they'll make you keep the tux shoes on.
But remember ... you'll only get to wear a tux at a couple of events in your lifetime, most of which will be in high school, and then on your wedding day, or weddings of friends. And most girls adore a guy in a tux - so wear it proudly and the girls will like it!
Your tux should look like the rest of the band members. You do not want to stand out. Do you have to rent it, or is the school providing it (my school's band did)?
Hey I am no fashion plate but I am pretty sure that not all tuxes are black and traditional. It doesn't sound to me like this is something that you are going to wear everyday anyway. Do a Web Search on tuxes and see what else is available. Check to see if there is a company close by to you where you can rent the thing. Download a picture of the thing as this is a school function and you may need approval for what you have chosen. I know how you feel about this thing. When I went to one of my brothers weddings and a tux was required since I Don't own one I told him I wasn't going unless he paid the rental fee. He did. Bear in mind I'm a guy who considers leisure ware at home under-ware. Good Luck Bob
