The same reason we pray to saints. Have you ever heard someone say "I'll pray for you"? Well when asking Jesus's mother and saints to pray for us, that's extra praying power. The prayer says "holy mary, monther of God, PRAY for us sinners, no and at the hour of our death"... also, as for the statues, that's just how it is. We don't "touch" them. It's just decoration. I think some people are confused. I think that people believe Catholics perhaps idolize the statues. See when Moses was receiving the 10 commandments, he came back to see everyone had built a golden calf to worship. They called that calf basically their new god because they gave up on God himself and didn't believe anymore. We're not "idolizing", it's just a tool. It's not necessary at all but it's just something Catholic churches do. Just like how they all have stained glass windows and the stations of the cross up and down the walls.
