Being Forgiven for Sins?
Published by: admin 2010-03-19
  • Does anybody else sometimes feel that since a person can be "forgiven for their sins", they see that as an excuse to do bad things.........knowing that God will forgive?

This is just a general curiosity question, and I have no intention of offending anybody.

  • ive always wondered whether there was a point in not sinning, when you can get forgiven anyway. its like getting a fine and never having to pay it.... whats the point!?

  • The point here really involves salvation. If you have confessed your sins and accepted Jesus as your savior, you are his child. You will not want to intentionally sin, however we are all imperfect beings and sin happens. We will be forgiven for those sins when we confess. Generally those who use "being forgiven" as an excuse to do bad things are not really saved and therefore not forgiven.

  • Perhaps, but I usually think it's unlikely. Growing up in the Christian church, I never met anyone who thought that the doctrine of free forgiveness gave them license to do as they pleased. They, like most people, tried their best and asked forgiveness when things went awry.

Because belief in forgiveness doctrine is usually conjoined with membership in a church, which emphasizes moral behavior, it is probably very rare for someone to exploit the doctrine for their own gain.

  • yes people do feel that way sometimes, but God knows the hearts of people and He will forgive only if that person is truly sincere and has the true intentions of not wanting to commit that sin again.

  • I have never known a born again believer in Christ that has this attitude. We are too aware of what Jesus went through to pay for our sins.

  • No i sincerely doubt that to be the motivation for sin ... that it won't matter .. in fact the sin is because of our lusts and desire to do something.. We actually aren't much different in our thinking than the unbeliever in this .. we both know it's wrong yet do it anyway ....then we call it falling or slipped ... the unbeliever is less tactfull about how he describes his action he says he doesn't care ... WAY more honest .. christians love to lie to themselves and anyone that brings this up ...Are we like Britteny Spears "Ooops I did it again ""... the only good thing is our willingness to repent and bring it to the only person who will ever have a shot at making this right //jesus .. the unbeliever totally misses god in this equation and thereby bears an unbearable burden.. My opinion on this is that we must be saved and trust in him alone for it...As we understand who he is and what is really going on we will grow in grace ... a full awareness of the repercussion of sin would help us make better decisions ...Is sin an outright betrayal of jesus? how are we affected spiritually because of willful sin///sorry i believe we all willfully sin>> sins of omission are so far removed from our discussion it appears we will never need or be able to get into that .. just my opinion great question

  • Can't *con* God.
    He knows your true feelings.

  • we confess our sins to Godâ ¦not to maintain our salvation, but to bring ourselves back into close fellowship with the God who loves us and has already forgiven us. If you are in a close relationship with God you will not be tempted to do bad things.

"In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!" Romans 6:11-15

Hope this helps some. God bless

  • Jesus said repent are you will perish. Read 1John ch2 and ch3
1John 3:6 Whosoever abide in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth
hath not see him, neither known him.
1 John 2:29 If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone
that does righteousness is born of him.
1John 3:8 He that commit sin is of the devil

  • I don't think you can be forgiven for sin, because I don't think sin exists.

That doesn't mean my conscious will let me do whatever I want.

  • Romans 6

1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

  • People who do this sort of thing aren't completely in tune with their faith and beliefs in God. When we sin, we don't repent just because we know God will forgive us. We do it so we can please Him. Don't forget that God knows our hearts and minds. He knows if we're sincere. If we're not sincere, he'll certainly know and our asking for forgiveness will fall on deaf ears.

  • Yes, I have to fight the urge to sin because Jesus has given me a free ticket to heaven.

But I have been told God knows your heart and knows if you intended to sin without remorse.

  • that falls under the lil reminder that you MUST repent of your sins in otherwords....turn from that sin you ask forgiveness for completely by asking for God to help you thru it... soo running amuck isnt going to get them forgiven sorry nice try though....God bless

  • Well the person wont be forgiven for that. You are forgiven of your sins only if you are truly sorry for doing it, not just by saying im sorry even though you did it on purpose thinking u can get out of it by doing that.

  • Jesus died on the cross for your sins. All humans do bad things. I don't think i've been any worse or better since i became a christian. God will always forgive you if you ask.

  • i have to admit , i've thought abt it ...but if u commit sin with tht in ur head , i doubt u'll be forgiven !

  • I have had that thought before but then I continue my reasoning. If God is forgiving my for my sins, then he loves me a lot, and since he loves me alot I want to please him by not sining.

Keep in ming "There is nothing you can do to make God love you more, and there is nothing you can do to make God love you less."

  • Yes you are correct that some people say "I'm forgiven, so now I can do anything I want" including drugs, pornography, lying, stealing, etc. They haven't repented from their offenses (sin) against God's directed law. Note that Jesus' 1st command in His 1st sermon was "Repent".

What you describe is called "Counterfeit Repentance" because knowing God has forgiven you means acting from there in appreciation of His free gift of grace. As Thomas Watson writes in his (1668) excellent book "The Doctrine of Repentance":

A man has gone on long in sin. At last God arrests him, shows him what desperate hazard he has run, and he is filled with anguish. Within a while the tempest (storm) of conscience is blown over, and he is quiet. Then he concludes (falsely) that he is a true penitent because he has felt some bitterness in sin. Do nt be decieved; this is not repentance. Ahab and Judas had some trouble of mind. It is 1 thing to be a terrified sinner and another to be a repenting siner. Sense of guilt is enough to breed terror. Infusion of grace breeds repentance. If pain and trouble were sufficient to repentance, then the damned inhell should be the most penitent, for they are most in anguish. Repentance depens upon a change of heart. There may be terror, yet with no change of heart. (p.15)

At first glance we Americans might think something written 350 yars ago doesn;t apply to us today, but the bible and "The Doctrine of Repentance" do apply. Pick up a copy of the very small DOR for $8 in your Christian bookstore and be amazed.

On p. 18 are listed the 6 ingredients for true repentance:
    1. Sight of sin.
    2. Sorrow for sin.
    3. Confession of sin.
    4. Shame of sin.
    5. Hatred of sin.
    6. Turning from sin.

The fruits produced by our speech, thoughts and behavior are what refelect that we are grateful for God's grace and being forgiven our sins through Jesus's amazing work onthe cross. Our speech, thoughts and behavior show if we are working for Him and the furtherment of His Kingdom.

Soli Deo Gloria (To God alone goes the glory)
