They hurt bats too. But honestly, who the hell cares? May all the birds and bats die, as long as it's helping people.
But if we use lots of turbines though it can reduce the natural winds of the planet, thus creating problems for people. .
No, they aren't. Granted,if someone made a mess of an area building a wind turbine complex, that could disrupt a local ecology. But that's just sloppy work--has noting to do with the operation of the turbines.
All--an d I mean ALL--a wind turbine does is use the wind to turn an electric generator. There's no fuel, no emissions, and no waste products. In short, nothing to hurt the environment.
Now, you'll see some false statements being put out --the source is the coal industry--to the effect that "wind turbines are killing birds." First, there's no evidence to support this falsehood. Second, all you have to do is look at a wind turbine in operation to see that it's not a danger to birds--the blades of the windmilll don't turn fast enough to be a hazard.
The bird deaths have not been substantiated. The birds are being monitored with doppler radar to see if indeed they are being killed by the windmills and the collected data shows that the fatalities correlate with poor visibility (during fog or at night). The birds are quite adept at avoiding the large slowly turning blades and typically fly over or around the wind mills provided that they can see them which for the most part, they can. The guy wires stabilizing the structures cause more bird deaths than the rotating blades. Those expressing concerns about wind mill bird deaths are doing so without evidence.
There are definitely problems with windmills, for one the manufacture of windmill components are made from petroleum (plastics and carbon fibre) or made with substantial amounts of energy from petroleum (refining iron ore to steel) plus the transportation and assembly of the windmill takes a lot of petroleum energy as well. The maintenance of the windmill also involves material manufacturing and transportation again fueled by petroleum.
Windmills are far from power on demand as they only generate when the wind is blowing. To get around this, we've been using an accountancy trick to store the energy. We store excess energy by selling it to the grid and then buy back what we use. Because of this, there must always be more power generated by other sources which can be varied on demand then there are wind power sources. Hence the more wind turbines we have, the more traditional sources we need just in case the wind doesn't blow at an inconvenient time. Wind tends to blow at night while energy demands peak during the day so the power from wind turbines are typically there when we don't need them and no wheres to be found when we do need them. Again this limits the use of wind turbine power to less than the basal night time consumption of energy.
Wind turbines do slow down the wind a bit but despite how large we make them, we cannot slow down the wind significantly to affect the environment. Wind turbines are noisy and are quite visible so they detract from the aesthetics of the country side. But the effect on air flow, noise and visual pollution are not major issues for the environment. The harmful effects of the wind turbines are from their manufacture / maintenance and from the false perception that we can substantially replace conventional sources with wind power.
John W pretty well covered the real problems with the airplane propeller style wind generator and besides they do mess up the view like Teddy complained about. You should see the junkyard of broken wind generators at white water grade near Palm Springs. SCE has blown millions on this and a couple of other equivalent projects that have all failed to produce more electricity than their cost and upkeep.
All coal and fuel oil power plants produce serious amounts of this junk, which is why we should be replacing them with plug in portable nuclear plants based on submarine plant designs. These can be built and tested in factories and then moved to site and be plugged in to replace a coal or oil fired boiler and leaving the rest of the plant unchanged. More output also, cleaner and much safer.

And space based solar is even more practical and profitable, but the democrats will not allow practical solutions because it would harm them financially because they depend on fossil fuel producers to fund their political campaigns and party structure.
1) birds
2) Lost opportunity costs are an economic harm. The extra money spent on wind power versus conventional power sources is not insignificant. You could, for example, take that extra money and give poor people pre-natal vitamins, preventing some birth defects. Bottom line: spending too much for anything means lost economic opportuntites and some of these economic actvities can have significant pain and suffering attached to them. But I don't really mind wind power much.
I heard Ted Kennedy opposed having wind power within any place his family could see it out on Cape Cod.
With the number of wind turbines you would need to replace one power station is quite considerable. This would cause some loss of habitat for birds and animals.
Wind turbines should not be considered environmentally neutral.
Depends on what types of wind turbines. Some of them kill birds, but only 1% as many as either cats or windows. All in all they are pretty harmless.
Wind turbines kill birds, many of them endangered species.
That is serious damage to the environment.
In my opinion they are, plus they are a useless financial benefit.
1. They do kill lots of migratory birds, and bats as well.
2. I calculated it out, and in order to have enough wind turbines to meet the equivalent of a nuclear power plant, you have to have at least 220 acres cleared. One nuclear power plant only requires a minimum of 5 acres. So, let's look at someplace like Pennsylvania. There is not a whole lot of farmers who will be willing to put a stupid wind turbine on their fields, so they would have to be installed in forested areas. 220 acres of cleared forests is doing a lot of environmental damage. I don't understand how anyone can justify putting wind turbines in (unless you are out in west somewhere with a lot of wind and nothing around to clear).
3. We are not financially stable to start exploring these types of alternative energy on a large scale operation. We won't be for a long time to come. Plus...we have 150 nuclear power plants in the United States. We should have a lot more than that...
They're mostly harmful as a convenient delusion. So many people are now deluded that they're a practical source of energy for the country. They aren't.
I've seen reports of people taking their homes "off grid" by buying a wind turbine and solar panels, (and batteries... ) It costs them $150,000 to do this. More than they would pay for electric utilities in their lifetime.
There would be little added efficiency to do this on a mass-scale, and the built-in inefficiencies would still be there. (The wind doesn't always blow, an enormous new grid of transmission lines, batteries required, etc.)
Coal and nuclear are so much better because they can be turned on, up, and down as needed. The power is always available, the grid and the infrastructure is simpler.
I was on a trip to the UK over the "summer" (they were all complaining about the cold weather.) I saw a lot of very big, expensive wind turbines over there, but I didn't see a single one actually turning and producing any energy.
There are many alternatives that are much much better. (Such as tidal, hydroelectric, even wave energy) This one should be given a rest, and let the creative people in this country come up with something better. They will.
The liberals say they are eye pollution.
They kill lots of endangered birds, that's hilarious.
