Agnitum's definition of Fast User Switching support

Published by: admin 2010-03-19

  • As many of you will already know there are several known bugs in Outpost Pro related to Fast User Switching.
(Just search this forum to find the details).

I have been having a detailed discussion with Agnitum support over the past few weeks about these problems.

Finally I received an email saying that "Fast User Switching support is in our to-do list for the next
    versions".

Shortly afterwards, I received an email from a Support representative called Ksenia explaining Agnitum's definition of the "Fast User Switching support" claim in the Features List (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/features.html) on their Web Site.

    I quote:

"Fast User Switching support lets users efficiently share one computer" means that if one user with Administrator rights Exits and Shutdowns Outpost before logging off the other user with the same rights can use Outpost.

Would you as a customer (or potential customer), reading their Web Site, interpret it that way?

I think that most people would interpret it to mean that "Outpost can be used without problems by more than one user logged in concurrently and logging in using Fast User Switching".
(ZoneAlarm Pro has no problems operating in this way).

    What do you think?

  • I agree, Outpost compares with no other firewall that I have used. It simple destroys all the competion.

I myself don't really mind having Outpost only work on one side at a time, though, it would be a nice addition. Nothing like that will keep me from using Outpost. I feel naked with out it :).

  • I think a little more work on FUS is needed. I wonder though, how many users this really impacts? To me it's irrelevant.

  • All Ive noticed is OutPost is a Cutt above anything ZA has ever come out with. My wife and I both are logged in as admin. We have tested OutPost using the 1 user admin and the other NOT user admin and staying logged on. i have no problem with seeing Agitum or not...all the well knowing its in the background WORKING.

No, I wouldnt even compare ZA with Outpost!

  • Yo EnGenie...

Have you tried putting your wife as admin also??

Since I tested BOTH with 1 of us as user and the other as admin..it was a NO GO...then BOTH as admin. the system works fluid.

Making her an admin may solve the problem of the shared wireless connection, but would probably create other problems as she is not that computer literate and may accidently screw something up or delete something.

My 9 year old son also uses my computer and I certainly would not want to give him admin rights!

Hopefully Buffalo Tech Support will provide me with a solution.

    :D

Even if every user was an admin, it would not solve the problem of Outpost being unable to sensibly work with Fast User Switching.

  • I have a bad problem with F U S I cannot access my husband's mail box I've been in contact with Agnitum & they emailed that their developers will be looking at this feature/rather lack of it! I cant agree that OP is the greatest I find it the most difficult firewall I've ever used. I've been on the Internet since 1996 & over those years I used Norton (wouldn't recommend it) & McAfee which was easier than OP only thing their telephone support deteriorated just as my sub expired. I'm beginning to feel I should have renewed with McAfee. I am so fed up with OP & not really getting much help. Problem is Purchased 2 years of OP & it seems that will be my sentence & maybe by that the time I'll understand how to use it/ Any one got some help for me please?

  • Marytea13,

It should not be necessary to use FUS to access someone else's email at all - you just need to add their account details to the email software that you are using. If you provide more details (i.e. what email software you use), others may be able to provide more help.

I agree with the others that Outpost Pro is better than ZA Pro. I switched over several months ago and do not want to go back as, overall, Outpost is a far superior product.

However they do need to fix F.U.S.

Since switching over to a wireless connection to a Buffalo AirStation router, I have to use F.U.S., so that my wife and kids can access the Internet when I am not home.

The Buffalo Client Manager 2 software seems to store all of the required settings (e.g. SSID, WPA key etc.) in a profile that is only accessible by the person who created it (me).

Therefore, to allow my wife access to the Internet when she logs in to her (non-administrative) account, I must be logged in concurrently (via F.U.S) to keep the wireless connection to the router open.

Maybe there is a way of sharing the connection profile between users, but there doesn't seem to be one.
I will have to contact Buffalo Tech Support.
