3D guilib (rotatex and rotatey animation effects like coverflow)?

Published by: anonym 2009-01-09

  • From the changelog:

2007-07-08 9520 fixed: rotatex and rotatey weren't quite right.
2007-07-08 9519 fixed: Missing file from 3D guilib commit
2007-07-08 9517 added: rotatex and rotatey animation types + moved the guilib anim system to 3D internally.

does this mean what i think it means? is a coverflow style interface on the cards now?

  • svnadress/skin/Project Mayhem III

  • I would really like to know how to make a rotating circle on it's y axis look 3d when at 90 degrees instead of dissapear.

Are you saying there is a way to do that?

  • Don't take my word for it but i know loop="true" requires it to be Conditional... have you tried condition="true"?

  • Hi all,

    i´m designer of mediaportal.

I must say you have done a great work here with the coverflow stuff.
    Looks absolute amazing !

..would be great if it give a solution to add that animationstuff also to MP.

Do you think there is a way to add it also to mp code ?

    Greetings Harley :)

btw: if you will have the thumbstyle i have made for the Xface skin, i can send you the xml and the gfx i have done. It should work also in XBMC.

  • ALL rotated textures get AA afaik

  • Still some jaggies, bummer. I'm compiling now to see how many jaggies came up on that screen shot from resizing

  • Does all the new 3D stuff create a hassle for the linux porting? I'm not real current on their progress, but I remember seeing that all the directx stuff was a hassle to try to port. Were they going to rewrite it all for SDL or use an emulator in the end?

  • a bit OT, but lol@tween bouncing :)

  • i want to download the skin with tortoisesvn and i dont know the svn adress:o

  • Fast scrolling through a big list will cause most of the animation to cease, and the images will simply update.

Nothing we can do about that. Also, it's mostly limited at that point to the speed it is spooling the thumbs off disc.

  • Nope. You can just fake "static" 3D look using images. Anything that does a 3D animation (particularly if it animates a lot) will be hard or impossible to fake.

I see no way of doing it other than having a full 3D model of the "coin".

Ofcourse, you could animate it outside of XBMC and use a multiimage :p

  • Here ya go, 16:9 3d Coverview:
    http://84.55.90.88/SS3-mini.jpg (http://84.55.90.88/SS3.jpg)
    3D_CoverView.xml (http://84.55.90.88/3D_CoverView.xml)VERY LOVELY!

    Thanks

  • Yes, loop="true" requires a conditional.

And it probably doesn't operate for condition="true" as there's nothing to trigger it on. Will see what I can do. It may be easier to keep the conditional stuff conditional (i.e. switching on and off on the condition) and introduce a new animation that is always running.

  • You can use ListItem(offset).* already. See XBox Classic's "coverflow" view. The main problem with it is that as soon as you move, all the offsets change, so it takes some creative animation work ;)

I'm not convinced of the advantage of having math in the skin to be honest - usually it's because you're doing non-trivial transforms to the items that they require individuality.

You're welcome to come up with a set of proposals and why they'd be beneficial - anything to make skinning easier I'm happy to at least consider!

    Cheers,
    Jonathan

  • Thanks Watzen much appreciated... ;)

  • I agree with Gamester. I would love to see Apple TV's coverflow techniques. Especially in the iTV skin ;)

  • I was about to celebrate that some one saved me some time (yes I do plan on doing this proper for 16x9 sometime) I downladed this one and notice a few grphical errors with it like the covers go outside the background if you have a really wide cover. And the the last icon on the left is wrong if they move right
Oh and like they said just a little too much gap in the middle

It's really is a b*tch if you find an error once your done... soo many places to change.
Will post a better one tomorrow. Without on the covers.
Btw, what does the border="" on actually do? could'nt find anything on the wiki.

    /Tomas

  • It's really is a b*tch if you find an error once your done... soo many places to change.

    Learn sed :)

  • Sounds like jmarshallnz is work on the camera settings...

    "Build 9594

added: tag to controls and windows to allow setting of different camera positions for the 3D rotations. Also fixed rotatey to scale correctly as it rotates."

    :)

  • ...its not really doable until I can set a camera position for each 3d control...I sure hope that the camera angle side of this skinning-engine feature is still being worked on(?), I have to say I REALLY LOVE everything Apple done with all their "Cover Flow (http://www.apple.com/itunes/jukebox/coverflow.html)" eye-candy feature in their skin...

Apple TV also have a very nice photo screen-saver which is based on the Cover Flow concept.
    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/images/stories/multimedia/apple_tv/appletv_screensaver.jpg
Basically photos from your library (or your album art collection) slowly scroll up the screen in different 3D planes, and then every 30 seconds or so, they do a quick 3D "swirl," ending back in their original location. A low-quality video of the screen saver in action can be found on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/v/IOqTl2mNqcM

  • Ofcourse it can. Anything MP can do, XBMC can do.

They basically use the same skinning engine, or at least similar enough that you can pretty much do everything they can.

Ofcourse, ours can look nicer, as we actually have real 3D available. It'd still be done using a "pseudo 3D" diffuse texture on it, but if cleverly aligned it might look OK.

Real 3D could also be done, but it'd be way more code (XML-wise) to get it right I suspect.

  • just from my amateurish study of that screenshot jrm posted, it seems to be the cover images are being AA'd but the frame around them isnt? thus the residual jaggies?

    am I right?

    AFAIK...

frame is AA'd, thats how AA looks!

  • The project is all GPL you know ;)

    Well mostly.

  • My question is how do you loop it continuously.Didn't MacGyver and JMarshall figure that out in the other topic-thread? => http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=26877

  • carousel animation is possible. It took me a few trys to get what I wanted. Before I did, It orbited like that.

My question is how do you loop it continuously.

  • Have you given any thought to nonlinear animation effects like ripples or springiness?

I was thinking about implementing a tesselation for it but was wondering if it was something that could be more easily done with shaders...

  • Maybe this 3D rotatex/rotatey could even be used in combination with the carousel animation effect (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=26877)?

  • I was checking out the forums to see whats new, and saw this thread.
It seems like the easiest way to give the skinner the most control would be to use what I purposed a while back.
Say you have a list, and in that list the current focus is Item.Icon, just give the skinners access to the variables you use for the list ie. Item.Icon(1) would be the next item in a list, and Item.Icon(-1) would be the prior item in the list, and so on, say +20 and -20 or so. Then you you wouldn't need to create different styles of lists, the skinners could, and the location of the list icons could be wherever they wanted. If you wanted to use a listview like apple uses for their icon view and that list was 2000 files long, it would choke in a circular view, but if the skinner displays only 20 icons at a time, the list would still look circular but other 1980 items wouldn't be displayed. It would give the skinners the ability to create the same kind of icon displays they do in the home window, but instead with list items.
It would mean more code for the skinner if they chose to use it, and the current code for listviews wouldn't need to be altered, so current skin compatibility would stay the same.

The code for skinners would be cut down by 1/20 if we had a way to make a variable add and subtract a value: i=1, i++, Item.Icon(i), Item.Icon(i-5). 80% of my carousel menu's code is because I can't use math in the skin.

    Would it be possible JM?

  • That's what I thought, first thing I tried. :)

This is what I tried on a XBMC-2007.07.09-Rev9523 build:

    Visible

It didn't work. It rotates one complete turn, like a spinning coin.

Sorry for the continued noob questions. Theres just a lot more you can do with skinning now and I want to add some interesting effects.

Edit: It must have something to do with the condition. The following works.
    Conditional
Now I need to find the right condition.

  • The Frame has an alpha-blended edge, thus it doesn't benefit at all from edge AA.

Instead, it's being bilinear filtered just like every other texture. As the image itself consists of a couple of pixels (1 pixel for the white I think) width, bilinear filtering doesn't do a very good job.

Probably making the image twice as big would probably do the trick.

    Cheers,
    Jonathan

  • Very nice! ...oh, and yes anti-aliasing on the cover top and bottom edges would make it even nicer :;):

...and here is a few more ideas/variations that could possible be made with this skinning feature(?):

  • loop="true" should loop stuff around.

  • ah, no edit, sorry I should of said this was actually on a folder with very little cover-art available so most of the time it was empty frames I was watching animate.

  • 720p http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/2300/screenshot081gr0.png

  • Is it possible to remove the jaggies?

  • I tried and its not really doable until I can set a camera position for each 3d control because as soon as I move it off the dead center of the screen the angles all go messy

Ah... I understand..... is this something thats likely to be added at some point (camera position for each 3D control) ?

Maybe you could have the side panel slide off screen in a similar way to your Classic skin giving you more real estate and the centre of the screen.

Perhaps that would stray too far from the original PMIII model, I dunno....

  • Love the illusion of 3D album covers Harley added to the MediaPoral FACE skin (now called the "Xface" skin), but I guess a such illusion can not be combined with this new coverflow/wrap-list animation effect in XBMC?

    ???

  • Theoretically, yes. Though it relies on many more changes than just these ones.

  • Sounds like jmarshallnz is work on the camera settings...

added: tag to controls and windows to allow setting of different camera positions for the 3D rotations. Also fixed rotatey to scale correctly as it rotates."

    :)

If thats at me I'm well aware of the work being done :) I am a team member after all

  • Hi Jezz_X. Any likely hood of adding the new style wraplist to PMIII? It seems logically as the angled covers allow more albums to be visible on screen at once. It would be a real boon to us 4:3 users. Cheers.

  • It's good to see you've updated the right skin :)

That's pretty cool. I was playing with those settings, but didn't succeed.

  • That looks great, these new animations are incredible

  • Probably bad font, as it's not smooth on my xbox. This screenie do have some bad jpeg artifacts but all I had to work with here at the office was paint.

  • Wasn't at you particularly ;) , just a general horrah! I love eye candy is the truth of the matter. I can sit just flicking thru albums now in Xbox-Classic going oooh ahhh lol :) But really tho, if it wasn't for xbmc (it's convenience) I wouldn't have listened to half as much music as I have in the last couple of years. Good stuff...

  • The smaller covers look better in my opinion but it is only my personal liking.

Maybe adding the cd case from this thread would look nice...

I know it is no real 3d model with depth only a flat texture but maybe it looks good???

  • Not unless Frodo comes and steals some more code ;)

    (He's most welcome ofcourse!)

I just added this to the main svn for 16x9 with 2 small modifications
Imade the cover aspectratio keep again instead of stretching it
And I extended the fade time for the side ones since 16x9 has more space before it hits the side menu

So Thanks for saving me some work
P.S. So Look for your name in the changelog

  • All textures are bilinear filtered and all rotated polygons are edge AA-ed AFAIK.

  • it's just as far as i can see the pc (no AA) and xbox(AA) versions of the frames are pixel for pixel identical, wheras on the covers themselves u can clearly see the effect and it's a definite reduction/elimination of jaggies.

  • stunning.

  • Thanks JM, I had no idea, I've still in the states, trying to keep up with what you guys are doing, looks like I'm not doing such a good job. It was right there in the SVN:

    1221 Container.ListItem(-4).Icon
    1222 Conditional

When did those get implemented? Looks like I'll have something to keep me busy when I get back. Wish I had an xbox here so I could see them.

  • Hello - That/This is a really cool development!

I use my XBMC (as most) as my complete media center and I love the PMIII skin. However I think that there is room (pun) to utilise more of the screen for one of the 'view' options. I am currently using the 'Screensaver' mode in the 'None' mode to achieve a 'Full Screen' view. I have modded MusicVisualization.xml to show a larger album cover etc.

What I think would be good is the whole '3D_coverview' as a full screen view option. i.e Left hand menu and top graphics dissapear (possibly brought back with a button) and only the grey bg fills the screen. The bottle left Album would go as well (double up anyway). In this case Album covers could be made larger too. Probably the same size as the current Album view.

I initially thought a 'Album/Jukebox' visualization could be a go but??

Finally: I notice that in Party Mode, the 3d COverview ans ALbum views change as the songs change however when in just 'Now Playing' with other selected files they do not change. (just the cover in the bottom left).

sorry to ramble but I think the fullscreen Album scroll/3D Cover flow/view would be awesome for all those with widescreen (16x9) views.

    J

  • Nice nice :-)
Well now is just antialiasing and a 3D Look from the covers missing, then it would be perfect!

  • JMarshall, I apologize. there is a way to use isvisble. I was using an id that was inside a group and it didn't work, but using the groups id works fine.

    !Control.IsVisible(3000) + Control.IsVisible(4000)
    background image
    495
    270
    180
    180
    LCARS-starfleet-emblem.png
    keep
    Conditional

Now is there a way to give the animation thickness. Pixture a coin spinning on the y-axis. When it get to 90 it disappears.

Even giving this control it's own id, you can use it in the IsVisible()

  • Neither of those have AA applied.

  • It shouldn't cause much hassle at all. For the opengl version it's just a matter of setting up the camera correctly, so the changes shouldn't be too bad.

For the SDL version they just have to ignore the Z component and it should do the trick.

There's not a huge amount of actual drawing code that relies on the hardware - GUI-wise it's contained to GUIFontTTF and GUIImage.

  • There will always be lots of possible animation effects left :)
Right now JM has most of the 2D linear stuff covered + fading + some cool 3D stuff. But there is always

Nonlinear ones like ripples / springy
3D distortions like spherize, cylinders, etc
    Effects like Hue/Brightness

It would be interesting to have different elements mapped someway onto parts of a 3D model..
    http://www.stepmania.com/images/screens/Docs/load_songs_in_itg-2.jpg

  • .....That's pretty cool. I was playing with those settings, but didn't succeed.

thats why your the Python Expert and I'm the Team XBMC Skinner
    just kidding

  • 360 images, maybe each degree wouldn't be necessary, but it would still be alot. I think I like it the way it is. :)

By the way I just committed the spinning emblem for the LCARS skin for AMT, if anybody wants to see it. You go to a category list to see it.

  • About a week or two ago we did that bit. It's what convinced me to finally bother with the 3D stuff.

Constant nagging by Jezz_X, CHI3f and SmokeHead keeps me on my toes :p

(I don't mind it at all ofcourse!)

All your bases are belong to us!

  • or making the covers form a kind of continuous polygon curving away from/towards the screen with the center being the currently highlighted album.

really i think we've only just scratched the surface of whats possible here, xbmc might be the only program who's skins are limited more by the imagination of it's skinners than by the functions in the skinning engine, and I mean that with all due respect to the brilliant imaginations of all concerned :D

  • would anybody be interested in trying a fan fold style.

I'm not sure if it's possible.

  • Just some small observations from using this today.

    1. It looks amazing, I nearly can't believe the level of slickness.

    2. When scrolling through a biiiiiig long list of things the animation looks kind of er, well for want of a better word, spazzy. It'd be cool if when scrolling fast something less weird looking could happen.

    3. Again, mind-blowing levels of coolness.

  • Did some investigating with the new build, yeah jaggies are there. But hey, xbmc is a few steps closer to a beautiful CoverFlow style. Nice work jmarshall and Jezz_X, this is really phenomenal.

  • yes and damn is that real crappy font or just .jpg compression screwing it up

  • I agree with Gamester. I would love to see Apple TV's coverflow techniques. Especially in the iTV skin ;)

Is there another iTV clone out there, or are you talking about xtV?

  • looks sweet,

That does look better on the xbox with jmarshalls AA addition.

Ok JMarshall, your turn to edit :)

  • I guess not many animation types are left to do now, the only things I could think of were like a shaking/vibrate animation for elements to call attention to themselves, and er...maybe... lighting? like let elements become brighter or darker depending on conditions.

I think a testement to xbmc's amazing skinning engine that I can only think of lame idea's, all the good ones are done :D

  • Like this:
http://84.55.90.88/SS-mini.jpgYes though maybe even a little less left and right margins on the cover sides, again like in this 4:3 screenshot:
    http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/5741/screenshot078ed4.png

  • Fantastic job Jezz and JM :)

  • Unfortunately anything that's not a geometry change or colour change stuff requires pixel and/or vertex shaders so would involve a reasonable amount of code shuffling, plus we'd need to write for both GL and DirectX (not that that's a big burden).

I think for springiness or ripples you'd require tesselation anyway (or do vertex shaders on a rectangle allow for that - never played with them!)

In either case, not something that's of a high priority to me at this point, as they're not exactly low-hanging fruit ;)

    Cheers,
    Jonathan

  • Yes, I have. I copied directly from Jezz_X Xbox-Classic. :)

The following does not work. But I will take your word for it. Since the only way it worked for me was with a condition. The Control.IsVisible() condition does not work either.

  • Just compiled a PC build. And I must say stunning work!
    it really looks sweet.
Thank you Jezz_X for the skinning and jmarshall for the programming.

Hope this gives birth to a whole heap of skins using the rotatey and rotatex feature.

  • Hmm... It really doesn't look like the edge benefited from AA.

Could there be a problem between the aliasing of the alpha channel conflicting with the polygon antialiasing?
Maybe try increasing the size of the frame the polygon (the image control) and edit the image to avoid the edges?

It could just be that one pixel lines like that wont benefit from AA.

  • it's not actually that the animation ceases, infact that'd be preferable, the problem is the animation makes the middle cover look like its jumping up and down slightly over and over.
