23 weeks pregnant.Possible premature labour ?

Published by: rose 2009-01-09

  • i am 23 weeks pregnant and Yesterday i started getting pains down the left and right sides of my stomach, across my lower abdomen and all across my back. The pains in my stomach were constant but the pains in my abdomen and back were coming and going. Also i hadnt felt the baby move all day. When i went to the maternity ward they said the hearbeat was strong but they did not know what the pains were caused by and said i needed to keep an eye out for my abdomen tightening.Today i have had exactly the same pains. Does this sound like premature labour or does anyone have any advice on what these pains might be?

  • If you are really worried about it, then go in, it's better to be safe than sorry. My girlfriend was having problems and called the doctor and they told her she was fine and to drink some water and take a warm bath, and a few days later when she called they had her come in, and she was fully dilated and had the baby. She was 25 weeks pregnant. You know your body and if you have a gut feeling that something is wrong, go in and get checked just to be sure.

  • They hospital staff should have hooked you up to a monitor to see if these pains are indeed contractions. It's possible to have Braxton Hicks at this point, but that's just your body's way of preparing for actual labor. Keep in mind your baby is growing quite rapidly at this point so you are going to feel stretching which can be painful and alarming sometimes. Also, by this point your baby is big enough to cause quite a bit of discomfort if he/she decides to take a nap on some of your organs! Try rubbing your belly and massaging it to stimulate movement. Don't worry too much, but never hesitate to call the doc if you feel that there is a problem. This is your baby and you have every right to check him/her as often as you need to in order to be comfortable. Good luck and & God bless!

  • it could be growing pains, or "round ligament pain." which, is the when the ligaments that hold your uterus in place is being stretched and pulled. it can make it very painful. i had really bad pains like you are having when i was pregnant sometimes. it should subside, if not, i would call your doctor if you are really concerned. the fact that there is a fetal heart rate, almost guarantees that everything is going to be fine. good luck.

  • If the pains are as bad as you say what are doing at home???

  • does your uterus harden when you experience the rhythmic pains? if so then you could be having prelabor symptoms--although braxton hicks cause the uterus to harden too they generally aren't termed as "painful." if your uterus isn't hardening when you feel the pains then its likely to be round ligament pain--which can be pretty painful at times--but is not dangerous, in fact its perfectly normal and to be expected. of course if you are worried you should go in, only you can know the severity of the pains...

  • Sounds like you need to go back and get checked, more than likely you won't see the same nurse
