Since I have flash player 8, i can't tell if it works or not but by choosing which version of flash player I publish a movie, is that all that needs to be done so that someone with a lower flash player sees my file created with flash 8 but published to a lower version of flash player? As long as the features that your movie uses are in the target version of the player, yes.
If you have some Flash Player 7 only features published for Flash Player 5, I think those features will just be lost, though I haven't ever been forced to publish to anything lower than 6, where documentation as to what features are available is still easily found. That's correct. If you have used any F8 features or actionscript that a lower version won't render it will give an warning when you go to publish.
Remember to change ur version checking for the browser. (the player is a lower version it will still try to play the file btw).
