The understanding of speed of like and speed travel into space.?

Published by: webmaster 2009-01-09

  • Sending a voice signal to another planet like lets say 100 years far away from us we want to send a direct signal to that planet..... how long does it take to get that signal to that 100year planet ?

And if your going to say 100year time.. then why 100year time.... does it take that slow to travel ?

Is travel signal the speed of light or greater ?

Is light travel v's the speed of sound is the same speeds or one is greater ?

When 1968 sends human to the moon did they travel the speed of light or did they speed up as slow as anything less then a 60km car driving ?

So the speeds of sounds and the speeds of light distance in between.. tell us.

Is there anything even greater then the super speed of anything... if so do we have that technology?

Imagine this your on the phone talking but hold on shes in usa and your in germany when talking on the phone theres not much delays your actually acuracy talking to each others without delays... so is that the speed of light or greater when speaking on the phone ?

  • 1) A planet 100 light years away will get a radio signal in 100 years because those radio waves travel at the speed of light. A light year = the distance a light speed signal can travel in one year.

2)That's not slow! The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second. Wow! That's fast enough to go all the way around the world six times A SECOND. It's literally as fast or faster than anything else in the universe, so calling it slow... realative to what, you know what I mean? It's just that the universe is an unbelievably huge place. For example, just our galaxy is 100,000 light years across. Can you imagine? going at 186,000 miles per SECOND, it would take you 100,000 years to cross just our oONE galaxy at the widest part.
Frequently Asked Questions About Special Relativity::
Theory of Relativity is the key to understanding this particular to travel through space at a speed greater than (or even equal to) the speed of light.

go beyond our current understanding of physical laws, such as particles, such as protons, near the speed of light and ramming them into targets.

    3) I'm not sure what you mean by travel signal. No object with mass can get close to the speed of light. So physical travel is slower than a signal. I'll also throw out that faster than light communication is also impossible by our current understanding of physics. Google Einsteins "light cones" for more detail on this.

4)No, they weren't going anywhere close to the speed of light. Light can reach the moon in just a little over two seconds as it is only 350,000 miles away. The Apollo astronauts took three days to reach the moon. Which is still very fast! But not nearly as fast as the speed of light.
They had to accelerate and decelerate, just like you guessed. They used the moons gravity to help them do this!

    5) The speed of sound in atmosphere at the altitude where jets fly on cool day is about 660 miles per hour. Much slower than the speed of light.

    6) Again, I'm not sure what you mean. I'm getting that English is not your first language, but that's okay, you're doing great. Again, there is nothing faster than the speed of light, though there are some intesting theories for "circumventing" that speed law. Quantum Teleportation and the Alcubierre Drive are two of my favorites. The Alcubierre Drive allows travel at "arbitrary" speeds. Basically unlimited speeds, but the workaround is that the spaceship the drive isn't really moving at all, just the space around it. Teleportation would of course be instantaneous.

The delay you are talking about isn't caused by any limitation in the speed of light. It is called a propegation delay and it has more to do with the speed of our networks and the curvature of the earth. If you are speaking over a fiber optic line then your voice is being transmitted at the speed of light, at least through the medium of the fiber optic wire.

    Hope all that helped!

  • I don't think you know what you're talking about...for starters, sound doesn't travel through space. Space is a vacuum, and sound requires a medium to move through. (That's why, in space, no one can hear you scream.) also, 'year' is a measure of time, not distance. The term 'light year' is a measure of distance, however, which refers to the distance light travels in a year. Sound travels much slower than light. The speed of sound is roughly 340.29 m / s, while light moves through a vacuum at 186,000 miles/second. The speed of light is the maximum speed at which anything can travel. Also, when talking on the phone, your voice is translated into electrical impulses, which move through copper phone lines much faster than sound. The impulses are then translated back into sound once they reach the microphone in your cousin's phone, next to her ear. Hope all this helps!
