Hey All,
I hope you will welcome this new thread as i have read the old one completely and I have come to the resolve that our playback issues are not xbmc completely related.
I have tried gutsy and hardy with no luck from xbmc, in the meantime i have setup and tested LinuxMCE which plays Video_ts folders fine across the network from samba or cifs. It cetainly was a task to get the server setup there too. the LMCE finds the parent device //Tower and then mounts all the devices under it ie //tower/disk1, //tower disk2. LMCE is built on kde 710 and uses pluto etc..
Up until now I have not even been able to watch a movie from my server even from hardy. I have serached hi and lo for payback related issues from with linus most of them revolve around getting a dvd to playback correctly.
I finally found a thread this morning that helped me to get a permanent mount of one of my nas shared disks. I can at least see a movie with ffwd and rwnd as well as chapter advance in Kaffeine, VLC and Movie Player and then playback fine these are regular dvd rips ifo, vob, bup etc..
here is a link to the site I used. I do not have a password on my tower so if you scroll down in the replies you will see how to set it up without a password and username. I am now trying to figure out how to move that mount from the /mnt dir to create a shortcut on the desktop. I am hoping that we do not have to create mounts for every share on our nas. I have 10 drives. I have not gotten playback in xbmc yet but I think I am getting closer. I have both the svn and the ppa on my hardy system. weird thing is when I click on a movie in the ppa I get a playlist playback aborted and when i click on a movie in the svn version i get nothing but the movie is seen in NOW playing and also if I get the context menu over a movie in the svn I do not get the play using option whereas I do see it in the ppa version.
NOW that the IE //tower/disk1 is a full time mount, I am wondering if my share in xbmc should be local. XBMC would still be looking in smb when the actual mount is now in /mnt/disk1. I have tried mount smb share on and off with no difference should the workgroup be left at default or right now I have it set to my windows (lan) named group.
Thanks,
Dave
User shares in unRAID is turned OFF - both servers.
Saw something odd, played a VOB/IFO that was a folder within a folder and it seemed to work fine. Need to play more to figure this out but maybe this is a clue?
blkmgk,
Well Yes and NO, after reading several forums, IE windows, I do not even have a mapped drive to my server for other than muxing from mkvmerge. This is an underlying issue with Linux as it were.
You can browse your network from the get go in gutsy or hardy and you can mount the drive just like you would in windows and that should be enough right!!! Well NO - for some reason the only way to mount the drives so that we can actually read or share from them is the way I have done it above. So actually XBMC is doing it right and as it normally has in the past. now where the issue is as i see it, somehow maybe the devs are going to have to look at another way of mounting the drives within xbmc that they are fully mounted like above in the post. just connecting to a smb share is not enough as it seems. Unless I am missing something. This is a know Linux issues and well talked about across many forums.

blkmgk,
here is another way and it works as well. you do not have to do the mounting as above in the thread. Once this is all done. Mount your drives from Unraid from places-network and they will be put on the desktop. Then when you go to XBMC change the workgroup under smb to your windows workgroup and select mount smb shares.
Then from system-places-admin-shared folders - setup the shares you just made from your places-network, they will all be available in the first drop down box and from the desktop where you put them.
Then in xbmc setup a source using home/.gvfs and all your windows smb shares will be in there. They are also available from the smb window under your ubuntu computer name in the windows workgroup but for some reason I cannot access them there. Do the below first.
Add Shared Folder back into the menu
1. System > Preferences > Main Menu > in the left panel click to select System > Administration.
2. On the right side, click the “New Item” button. In the “Name” box of the “Create Launcher" dialog, provide a name. (eg Shared Folders)
3. Click the Browse button. In the resulting screen, choose File System.
4. Browse to /user/bin/ and select “shares-admin” and click the OPEN button.
5. We are back at the “Create Launcher” dialog with the path box now filled in.
6. In the Comment box add what you like. This is text that will be displayed when the mouse is hovered over our new menu icon. (eg. Shared Folder Configuration) Arch Linux Forums / No DVD playback:: 23 posts - Last post: Oct 11, 2008I became curious about this thread and I can't playback DVD through (S)Mplayer anymore. This is new from the last time I tried (a month ago) http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=38436HOME | How Can I Convert a CDFS File To Video_TS - Virtual Dr Forums :: 5 posts - Last post: Jan 18, 2005I need to convert it to Video_TS so that I can burn it onto a dvd CDs if your standalone player supports VCD playback) you can play. http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=180800HOME |
7. Click OK. Now System > Administration should have a “Shared Folder” (or whatever you typed in the Name box) icon.
8. If we choose to use this option, we can start Shared Folders, drag a folder into it and click to select it. Then choose the “General Properties” tab and change the “Domain/Workgroup” entry from WORKGROUP to ROSAN
9. This makes Hardy appear in the same workgroup as the other computers on the network. It also changes the Workgroup= WORKGROUP entry in /etc/samba/smb.conf
Alternate method to change workgroup name
1. I am nervous about using Shared Folders now. Maybe it was removed to discourage newbies like me from using it.
2. Applications > Accessories > Terminal
3. CODE:
gksudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf.
Provide your password at the prompt
5. Find the entry “Workgroup=WORKGROUP.
6. Change this entry to read “Workgroup=(your workgroup name. In my case ROSAN)
7. File > Save. Close gedit
8. back in Terminal type exit

Dave
So you have User Shares turned on?
Dave
I just tested in SVN and it playsback fine as well. I added another share to the path and it seems to take forever to read the share there is like 200+ movies on those two disks combined and it takes about 30 seconds to read each time you click or update.
there are some other command line that you can add to the mnt point in fstab but I am not familiar enough with those hopefully someone else can chime in with some more linux experience than me to help this out.
thx,
Dave
I just went into XBMC settings and set the audio options both to default and it now passes DD and DTS fine.
Why is the audio delay set to 3.0Ms as default. I just set it to -0.0 for all movies and it is fine now.
Rgds,
Dave
Okay will try to look at this today time allowing. However I will point out that in the past DVD playback HAS worked occasionally - only to get broken again. I've also already got XBMC setup for the correct workgroup. As for multiople mounts and slowness - not really. I use a R/O top level mount that spans all 8 of my media drives at once. Actually I use a couple of these but don't ever access more than one at a time. One is called DVD, the other HD, another Music, I might have one called pics but you get the idea. On each of the drives I have a directory called DVD, HD, or Music etc. and anything put in those is shared at the top level correctly per unRAID. No permissionsrestrictionsusers set for these except that they are Read Only to prevent stupid mistakes from causing disasters.
Hate the idea that we must tweak the underlying OS for this when XBMC can do it already - it works great on XBOX. But to get this working for now I'll dork with it. Makes me wonder though how this will be handled when XBMC is the desktop and soemone has less organization than what I've got going on here. :-O
Interesting update! As of 14321 this ALMOST works! I get the FBI warnings, I get some trailers playing normally, the menu speeds by at light speed , then the main video begins to play - jumpy and pixelated but at full screen. This from an SMB share using XBMC's SMB code - no previous setup share. It's closer!
Okay, so if you mount the shares in Linux underneath XBMC it works fine but if you use the internal mounting that XBMC offers it fails? Umm I would still call that an issue with XBMC wouldn't you?
hey Guys,
BLKMGK. It works - NO sound but that is my codec on the board I think.
OK. What a nightmare. forget SMB alltogether.
from my last post. follow that link and do the following.
from terminal window.
sudo mkdir /home/user_name/media/share name
I used /home/user_name/media/disk1, disk2, disk3, etc...
I had to do this for 10 disks.
Then I gedited /etc/fstab
at the bottom of the file I inserted
//tower/disk1 /home/user_name/media/disk1 cifs exec 0 0 (these are zero's)
I did this 10 times changing the disk1 to 2, 3, 4, etc...
save the file.
now run sudo mount -a
When you hit enter in terminal you will have to type your root password for as many shares as you set up. I had to do it 10 times of course.
now in xbmc - ppa have not tried the svn.
go to your video section. I removed the windows smb share and created a new source choosing home folder - then media then disk 1/movies1.
add a couple movies to the library and then goto library view and click on the movie. I get full screen playback and I have tested 4 movies now.
I changed the source at first and tried to clean the library but it would not clean so I have a bunch of movies left over from the windows smb share I found if you just do a refresh of those movies in library then they will update to the new path.
I find it a little slow to access the network this way for some reason. I have done so much to this install of hardy that I would imgine I need to reinstall clean.
I am going to test an 1080p movie .mkv and .ts right now - hang on....YES on both counts. mkv - full screeen ffwd and rwnd and .ts full screen ffwd and rwnd work.
It does take a while to access the shares for some reason. blkmgk let me know if this is happening in your case as well.
rgds,
Dave
The other option I noticed in XBMC when we are setting up share if you click on SMB, i get a workgroup (hardy) and I get homework which is my windows workgroup. I am not sure how to make the ubuntu machine part of the windows workgroup, I would not think it matters being a workgroup and all if it was a domain I would think there would be some issues.
the errors in the logs for playback from an smb share are directly related to a sharing/permission issue as we have concluded.
I really hope there is an easier way to solve this, I have searched everything related to network and sharing for the past week and the above is all I could come up with.
Are you noticing the slow mounts like I am IE share two drives and then go to your movies share in file mode. It taked a while to open them to open the share to be able to access the files inside.

Dave
