How do I upgrade video codecs? (MKV specifically)

Coding Horror: DVD Ripping and Nero Recode::
The AVC (Advanced Video Coding) profiles use the new h.264 codecs being developed for MPEG4. and WHOA something is wierd after the latest Nero upgrade.

I have a series of videos encoded in MKV format, and while XMBC seems to support it, when played in my xbox the video is jittery and broken. I assume the codec is installed in XBMC but is presumably an out of date version as the files work just fine on my home PC (which by the way is a feat in itself--these files are the first I've *ever* had that worked better in my PC than my Xbox thanks of course to you guys).

Is there a way to request a new version be built into XBMC or instructions somewhere on how to compile it in myself? I looked in the XBMC Manual and the only thing that sounded similar was to look into this "video lan streaming" thing, but i'm not really sure.

yeah, except not.
XBMC doesn't use "codecs" in the manner that you understand them from a "normal" computer system. they are not system-level things which are installed.

XBMC uses a combination of FFMPEG and MPlayer to do it's media playback.
as a result, your issues stem from these components. there isn't really a good way to "update" these components, either.
if you are running the latest CVS build from T3CH or a build you made yourself, then your XBMC is as "up to date" as it gets.
