Software Tools For the Web Developer

Published by: rose 2010-03-10
  • When I joined this forum a couple of months ago, I was a CSS newbie (yes DC, I know I still am). I was eager to learn all I could about style sheets and over the months I have compiled a list of reference sites that I use on a regular basis.

We all get asked questions about which tool is the best to use for this or that, where can I learn about style sheets, is there a tutorial, ...

I have undertaken to compile a list of the tools we all like and some reference sites we have long forgotten. I need your help to make this a complete list. As I am able to make this list useful to our newcomers, we can all refer our new friends to THE TOOL LIST (http://dev.home.mindspring.com) .

Help me make this a comprehensive list by filling in the spaces. I still have more to add from browsing our past postings, but PLEASE send me your favorites. Make sure you include both a brief description and the URL for the download.

View the list (http://dev.home.mindspring.com) and submit your additionsl

  • Look here for the Toolist (http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/d.elliott/webtools/) on my site.

    DE

  • Gee -- you have some interesting programs listed, but you forgot one really important graphics program -- PaintShop Pro!!! I find it to be one of the most user-friendly graphics programs out there. :jumpy:

  • Thanks DCElliot, I did not want to post it without your permission first, so to speak

  • Glad I could help ByteWizard.

I have the pro version which has more features. The funny thing i though, that the freeware version has more built in scripts than the Pro version?

Very strange. Perhap they think that the pro version only appeals to professionals that will write heir own scripts anyway!

    It seems wierd though.

  • Another tool list for all to see

  • I was searching the forums for something to learn CSS and found this. Great idea and list, I put it in my bookmarks at once. I might even get a go at PHP if the tutorials convince me.

    Thanks to everybody.

May I rather suggest faux pas ? In french that's "bad step" which could be assimilated to "stumble" or "oops !". I didn't know it was used in english !

  • Hi VileFriend.

    This link is no good:
    http://download.com.com/3000-2092-10000000.html?legacy=cnet

Said the program is to old?

There is a hell of a lot of work need doing on my site.

I only get bit done now and then; no other person on the team knows anything about web sites.

It was just left to me to muddle away. I think to too complicated; I need to make a more basic site that I can add onto as the site grows.

Any suggestion, keep it simply, only build this site for fun.

Hope to her from you or another web designer

  • Well, lately I've been trying out HTML Kit. It's at http://www.chami.com/html-kit/ . Some of it's features are really neat. You can do a lot with it, my only grip is that somethings about it just aren't very user friendly. Tons of plugins are available.
Funny, You can pick about 75% of all the free web editors out there, find something to really like about it, along with something to really dislike.
I'm still waiting for 1stPage and hoping for the best.

  • XnView (http://www.xnview.com) is a great image program that has more features then Irfanview. The largest download even comes with a program that allows you to batch process (perform multiple operations at once on several different files) images, which simplifies the task of making thumbnail galleries.

XnView supports many different image formats, including Photoshop images and over a hundred others which makes it a great all around image viewing/converting/optimizing tool.

Like IrfanView, XnView is also free.

While marquee may be M$ it does work in both main browsers. I had sent BW a suggestion re a scrollbar on the credits section, but a marquee or JS scroller would capture better the intent of what that section is doing: highlighting the brilliance of all those associated with the Evrsoft forums. nyuk nyuk.

Don't worry 'bout the slopes, they are coming...

Jinxy, where did you get that link? If you have been using 1st page for 2+ years then you're far more experienced with it than me. I'm not a website designer but merely a 'nit-picker' who notices other peoples' feaux pas using logic and can usually deduce a resolution.
Have you thought of Amaya (http://www.w3.org/Amaya/) to do it all yourself or Millenniyum Web Design and Graphics (http://www.millenniyum.com/index.htm) for prefessional assistance?

  • it's great software

  • Places are getting few and far between, I'm afraid.

Here is one (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description.asp?fid=7622) at PCWorld. It is a bit fussy at times, I had to click the link a couple of times to get it to work.

  • This is an excellent tutorial type site that explains WHY css is 'a good thing' as well as how to use it...

Damn...just noticed you already recommend it.

  • Been using avg for years and Im planning to use it for a long time still. Great Anti Virus.

As for that review if you look at thier other reviews you will realize they get a referal payment from thier link which makes thier review pretty useless

  • I had directed the Wiz to your earlier post but he couldn't find it. (Couldn't find his butt with both hands if you ask me. ROFL) So I posted it directly.

Everybody - this was originally Bindel's post

    Satisfied??:D

  • Thanks Dianne. Many of the people who frequent this forum made suggestions. I am pretty well caught up on the postings, but there are a few more things I want to research and find links to them. I know how difficult it was to find information when I first started reading the posts on this forum and you don't want to ask too many stupid appearing questions altho I must say that everytime I did I received courteous and thoughtful advice.

  • Here's an FTP program I use. It's called FTP Commander and at http://www.internet-soft.com/ .
There's also a little program I use to help me with web site colors. With all the problems I have a selecting colors, it really helps me. It's called ColorLab and it's at http://www.blueknot.com/

Oh, I realize that this forum is very particular to 1stpage, but would it be a looked upon as treachery to list other editors? There are 1 or 2 that are really good also.

  • I too have used Ace html and I have noticed one little bug. I have installed un-installed and re-downloaded the program three times but always have the same problem and that is with spellcheck causes the program to freeze up. Other than that runs perfect has any one else noticed that?

  • Don't know about anyone else, but sometimes when I'm in the middle of a project I like to use a text editor to code with, mostly because they're faster to load than a HTML editor.

Here's a list of some of the best (IMHO):

    NoteTab (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/notetablt.html)
    Crimson Editor (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/crimson.html)

Of course, Snapfiles still has a great list of free editors (http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/webpublish/fwtext.html).

  • DC...

I like your suggestion of the marquee. I am almost ashamed to admit I have used marquees in the past and as I "matured" in design, I quit using them long ago. This however is one of the few good uses. I will look into DB's suggestion of JavaScript to meet standards, but a quick and dirty until I have more time is the marquee.

    I like it!

BTW, I thought you were on the slopes during the day and more interesting things in the evening that signing on to this forum. Have you just not left yet? I hope your trip did not get cancelled.

Okay I look at and feel reviews of software programs like I look at and feel about reviews of movies...Stupid and useless.

I never read someone else’s "opinions". I always try it for myself or see it for myself if you will.

I have personally been using AVG for more yrs then I care to count. I would never give it up. I have had McAffee, Dr Sol, and many other programs and frankly they never picked up as much or as quickly as AVG has over the yrs.

Again I will say this people...do not trust my opinion or anyone else’s, go and see it, experience it for yourself. Don't jump on someone’s bandwagon..........Make your own ride!

    Again IMHO :D [COLOR=indigo]

  • I found it on the evrsoft / 1st page 2002 download web site.

Its the big green & yellow button, stating on this link:

    http://www.evrsoft.com/download/

Clicked on it and it comes up with the following:

    "
This title is no longer available!

The program you've requested, "PrivateEXE", is not available for download at this time. You might try searching for this title at a later date, or use the search box to look for a similar program now.
    "

So right now i can't download it.

My computer crashed last week, i ended up formatting my hard drive.

Now need to get a copy of 1st Page 2000 V2

    Any one got any suggestions?

  • I use UltraEdit for my text editing. Very useful with lots of functionality :P

  • I gave Notetab Light a run, and it has one glaring weakness... There is no syntax highlighting whatsoever. Its a good replacement for Notepad, but falls short of being a good HTML editor.

The software is STILL available here (PC World download server). (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description.asp?fid=7622) I just checked, and it's still there, so BE QUICK, just in case.

  • This (http://www.markup.co.nz/) looks to be a great site. One of the things they have is a great XHTML clip (macro) library for NoteTab (http://www.notetab.com), my favorite text editor. I think it is worth adding, perhaps with a crosslink in the NoteTab section as well to this link:htttp://www.markup.co.nz/xhtml/xhtmllibrary.htm which leads to the XHTML library.

  • I've used 1st Page for about a month or so, and I like it, user friendly and all... but can anyone tell me why the (excuse the language) f**k :WTF: there is an imbeded worm in the latest release!? :grrrr:

I'm referring to a file that is supposed the be a 'button' in the 'Iscripts' part of the installation called "six buttons from hell".

I just don't see how this could be a mistake and am very dissapointed by it.
It just ruined what is a nice program which I thought was created by good people.

  • Find a software tool for most any Web Developer needs here. If your favorite tool is not on the list, contact ByteWizard and I will add it to the list.

    Web Tools (http://dev.home.mindspring.com)

  • Regarding the six buttons from hell.

Anti-virus programs have a limited vocabulary when it comes to describing behaviours. Six buttons is a nuisance script to demonstrate spawning of multiple windows by a browser javascript. It is not a virus, worm, trojan or any of those other things. At some point someone creating antivirus software decided that its behaviour was sufficiently bad - and it could be used maliciously - so they tagged it as a virus. 99.999% of 1st Page users would never have known about it and had no problems. Of the other 0.0001% who did find it, some would have played with it (after reading the warning) and perhaps froze their computers. If they were smart that would have happened exactly once.

  • I use an incredible text editor called http://www.notetab.com/banners/ntbani.gif (http://www.notetab.com/) that is programmable. I have developed small programs (called clips) that create static pages that are easily updated.

You can get it to function essentially as an HTML preprocessor, but it has a great deal of flexibility.

Here is a menu of the functions I have built for maintaining an Intranet site:
    #########################
    ____________________________
    ** Important - Read This First **
    ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
    Page Generators
    ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
    Generate Pages Automatically
    Generate Home Page
    Generate Electronic Journals
    Edit What's New
    Edit Home Page Content

    Menu Maintenance - Readme
    ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
    Edit Menu
    Generate Menu

    FTP Utilities - Readme
    ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
    FTP current file

    Other Functions
    ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
    Open Policy Watch Home Page
    Edit Style Sheets
    Update Local Clip Library
    Copy Clip Library to Site
    Backup Site to Local Drive

    ############################
For example "Edit What's New" allows editing of one small portion of the page that is on 20 different pages. I then select "Generate Pages Automatically" to update everything. The "What's new" content is inserted as an include and much of the content is read from a CSV database. When the pages are saved, a prompt comes up asking if I want to FTP them to the web server. It then handles the logon, FTPs the files, gives me a log, all without leaving the program.

Like any rich programming language, its not simple to program, but there is a good support community, and pretty reasonable support from the company, Fooke's Software.

I'd recommend trying the Lite version (free) and if you really like it, spring for the Pro version US20$ - it has syntax highlighting for a number of languages and is a real speed demon.

It is able to send commands to other programs and capture output so that it can become very sophisticated in automating any repetitive text-processing task.

I see Zero is giving it a try and would urge him and anyone else to stick with it. I will share my expertise as time allows.

Faux pas is frequently used in English, but as you can see, it isn't often spelled correctly. :)

  • Just a quick note to let you know that the award-winning, #1 HTML editor, my favorite, etc. etc. etc. is no longer available ANYWHERE! I must've tried 500 links for the software and they all say "Sorry, 1st Page 2000 is not available any longer!" I gotta say that this sucks! They need to shut down their website or something! It's so frustrating. Nothing compares.

  • I just purchased a new computer and was not able to transfer the previously installed version of 1st page. I went to download and it is no longer available. Is there any way I can get it, because I just started getting familiar with it and love it.

    Thanks

  • OK, for ease of use in developing buttons, list bullets, menus, DHTML menus, themes, and so on, I've found the Xara's Webstyle is invaluable. They can be found at http://www.xara.com/

It's also, by the way, reasonably cheap, which is nice!

I used it to develop the last two incarnations of the Practical Airsoft navigation system, and it's cut development time for nav bars in half for me.

I also used it on http://www.londonraynet.org.uk/, developing the general theme from there, so that shows you how effective it can be.

Next up, Top Style Lite; not as feature-packed as the full (pay) version, but good to go for CSS1 at the very least.

Finally, for scroll bars (and thanks to Flogg (http://developers.evrsoft.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1000) for the pointer on this) is Scroll Bar Wizard. (http://www.ohouse.plus.com/sbwiz.htm) It's also free, and will help immensely on developing colour themes for scroll bars - takes the aggro out of things incredibly!

I therefore believe that all three tools would be worthy additions to your Tool List!

  • Also, I think that http://www.alistapart.com is a good site for CSS, XHTML tc.

  • The entry for "First Page" is mistyped as "Front Page" though ... :p

  • that's a useful list.

i also use xenu to find broken links in my site.

you can download it at http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html

  • I gave a look at Ace HTML 5, one of the software packages recommended by Beev. I played with it last night and so far am very impressed.

Define your own syntax highlighting. Syntax checking. Multiple browser support. Uses Top Style for inline CSS edit.

    Thanks Beev!

  • I just joined this forum site, but i have been using 1st Page 2+ years now.

    Is their an updated version?

  • Color tutorial (http://www.colorschemer.com/tutorial.html) and Online Color Scheme Generator (http://www.colorschemer.com/online/)

I have adapted the Color Scheme Generator for download to your harddrive. A number of the positioning elements are off in the Online version. I want to make it clear - I did not author this, I just tried to improvve the aesthetics a bit.

Note: this does not work in Netscape, only IE.

  • ByteWiz

Normally I am not in favour of but it provides an interesting way of dealing with content on a liquid page. Consider this under your menu:

    height="300px" scrollamount= "1.5" scrolldelay= "10"
    onmouseover='this.stop()' onmouseout='this.start()'>

This list of software tools is maintained by

Joel Harper (ByteWizard) for the friends who visit the

    Web Developers Forum.
If you have a favorite software tool you would like added to
    the list, send
    me a brief description
    why you like the tool
and the URL where it may be downloaded.

Many thanks to David Elliot and David Bindel for their
active and passive participation in the design of the site.
By studying their excellent designs and asking DC
many questions, the site has evolved to its present form.

  • What a useful list - and considering how many of us there are, it's suprisingly short. Shows we agree on some things, at least!

    Thanks for the page,

Too true ByteWizard! I was drawn to this forum because I downloaded good old FREE 1st Page 2000 and when I was installing it my updated Norton's antivirus 2001 threw out a warning on C:Program FilesEvrsoft1st Page 2000IScriptsButtonsSix buttons from hell.izs which it then quarantined! The name was scarey to begin with!:cons: My 1st post was Evrsoft suspect file! because I got told This message is an automatically generated reply. This system is designed to analyze and process virus submissions into the Symantec Security Response and cannot accept correspondence or inquiries. which they then said we know this but there is no fix available"! So after just 2 replies I went AWOL and...:bang: BoRS finished it with I suggest that everyone who is reading this thread will go and read the text written here. BoRS. While I was away I decided to rid myself of the terminal faults and other problems like the hanging of MSINST for MS-OFFICE XP and went to Download AVG Free Edition (http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_downl.htm?session=a885337b44d2425b564e99236713e3fb):D This is now my preferred anti virus software! PS: Don't go near WebRing (http://www.webring.com) they're full of predatory popup ads!:vomit: You might like Amaya (http://www.w3.org/Amaya/) though!:D

  • I've been using AVG for year, reccomend it to all my friends, clients etc....

It has never ever let me down, that counts for a lot with me. The reviewer was actually wrong on several points. I set my AVG to update DAILY I've also seen it detect double infected files.
