I hope I'm not gettin' to the stick-in-the-mud stage of music listening, but today's emo-ish rock doesn't cut it... why?

I'm a Gen Xer, graduated in 1995, wore flannel and docs, played drums, could sepparate the bull from the good.

What happened to the music scene? What happened to alternative rock?

I want to know exactly, as much details as anyone can give, WHY todays music for todays youth all sounds the same: vocals (so damn emo-ish), the guitars sound the same, the ideas and muses are the same.

Bands like Yellowcard, post-Blink bands (Boxcar Racer/+44, etc...), Fallout Boy, My Chemical Romance, AFI, Saves the Day, Greenday (American Idiot and beyond), etc... you see the pattern.

What are they doing wrong? Is this the sad future for alt. rock?

Here's the other end, my generations music: The 90's had it good, Gin Blossoms, Tool, Dishwalla, The Verve, Nirvana, Primus, Jane's Addiction, White Zombie, Alice in Chains, etc... the list can go on and on and on and on.

Why can't there be music like there was in the 90's, where the vocals weren't whiney, where there was a clear distinction of the bands. For example, look at how different Dinosaur Jr. was from Smashing Pumpkins, Tori Amos, Rage Against the Macine, and Soundgarden. Each band was a unique entity. If a band was said to sound like another, the band carved out a unique sound for themselves (such as the case between Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots - Weiland & Co. found their own thing, BUT Plush will always be classic, even though it's very Pearl Jam-ish).

Please, can someone answer most of these questions with logic and examples. I will ignore you if you say anything along the lines of "your just bitter, don't be a hater, just because, you old fogey, your close minded, etc..." Get the picture? I need to understand why music is getting worse.

Is it corporate Ameica, is it Myspace, is it a lack of creativity, is it a formula has been found and no one wants to deviate from it, or is it that today's generation (Gen Y & Z) wouldn't know a good band if it sat on their face)????

  • To tell you the truth, the bands you listed aren't emo at all. The real emo music genre is dead. Bands like Rites Of Springs or Antioch Arrow were considered emo.
What happened you say, well alot. Now that people like different music styles than from the 90's, more bands have been achieving the goal to sound different.
AFI is my favorite band. Now despite the way decemberundergound sounds, it sounds nothing like their older music. With each new cd afi comes out with, comes a newish sound. I know that you listed afi probably from Miss Murder or Love Like winter. Honestly, their latest record sounds nothing like any of the albums that came before that. If you ever get the chance, just check out their older music. Since I'm an afi fan, I know alot about them.[They have a new song called Ether, which sounds really good.] I don't know about the other bands you listed so I can't really tell you much about them.

Some of the bands you listed from the 90s, some of them I can't tell apart, because I think they sound the same. But I will admit that there is some distinguishment between different bands, but there are also some bands that do sound the same and I do mistake them for other bands.
As you said, bands all have the same whiney voices. Not all of them do. When you turn on mtv, they always play the same bands, and you can never get anything different. You really have to check out more music. Just because a band isn't on the tv doesn't mean that every band in the world sonds the same. You'll be surprised at how many bands are undiscovered and are really good.
I think sometime with bands, they can't get the sound that they want because of their record label. Some record labels, you sign a contract for so many years and you pretty much have to make to sound that the other bands on the record label sound like. So sometimes bands have to change their sound because the record label won't release their music even if it sounds really good. There are so many possibility of what's happening.
I listen to punk music [not the shitty stuff people are concidering punk, like real punk/hardcore punk and bands like that. Alot of my bands are from the 80s and 90s that I listen too.
