Does a hard drive help the computer go faster?
i'm getting a new hard drive for my computer. is it really going to help my computer work better? it takes a long time to do ANYTHING right now!
actually the hard drive can make the computer go faster.... a hard drive that is larger and faster allows the transfer of data faster.... all go hand in hand.... a 160 gig hd with 5400 rpm will be slower then a 160 gig hd with 7200 rpm... there is also cache that plays in the equation....
A new hard drive will not affect the speed of your computer. But the new install of Windows (and your other software) on the new hard drive probably will. As you run Windows, add and remove programs, download things, add and remove files, etc., it can cause minor errors in Windows that - when you get enough - will cause it to run slower and slower.
A fresh install of Windows will correct all those problems and allow it to run faster. Also, the new hard drive will probably be larger, giving you more free space. Having more free space can also increase speed of your computer. COMPUTER FREEZES:: computer's hard drive. • Under The Hood How to safely work inside . So in one sense, the "new hard drive" will not affect your speed. But the new install of Windows and the more space probably will.
Hard drives will not necessarily speed up your computer (unless it is a drive which reads information faster than your previous one. Even then, it will only be so much.)
If you want to speed up your computer up, follow these steps:
- add more memory.
a relatively easy and simple way to improve the performance of your laptop would be to add more memory (or RAM).
http://www.howstuffworks.com/ram.htm
make sure you find out what type of memory you need by going to your manufacturer's website.
-Change some of your performance settings
changing your lap-top's battery performance to the highest value can also be a quick way to improve performance. (you can go the the control panel, if using windows, and changed your battery's performance from something like balanced to something like high performance). be warned thought, changing these settings to high values will of course drain your battery faster...
you can also go into the BIOS and turn up the performance of your processor, your hard drive, etc. however, i would advise you have someone a little more experienced do that for you.
-keep your computer clean... I put a new hard drive in a USB case but it will not show up in My :: Now, if you go to My Computer you should see the second hard drive and you can Can you please help me with something? no i do not mean physically keep it clean. for the most part, the main reason why a person's computer would slow down would be because of malware, spy ware, etc.
keep your computer protected, and running smooth, by using these:
Avast Anti Vir (or AVG anti Virus)
Ad aware 2008
(install any virus protection you had previously if you decide ot use avg anti virus. they might conflict.)
-De frag
something most ppl should do a little bit more often.

download this program and utilize it. It might also help to look up the definition of defragmentation...
-If your using vista...
turn off all that fanciness... a big part of why vista is so obsolete is because of its very greedy interface...

go to this site to learn about even more ways...
even though the site says how to speed up windows vista, you can use these concepts do speed up virtually any computer out there... the same suggestions have been made time and time again.
-Processor
Something I highly recommend you get a professional to do for you. Replacing your processor with a faster one is no small feat for someone in your position. Doing this can guarantee an increase in speed.
No. RAM which comes in the form of 1Gb/2Gb/4Gb sticks is what you need.

RAM is the computer's memory. If the computer has more memory, it has a better chance of working better because it can remember more tasks etc.
Here's what you have to do. Maintenance!!
Go to My Computer and Right Click on the C: and click Properties. Then do a Disk Defrag. This should be done once a week if you delete and add a lot of files daily!
But first run the Error Checking tool which is above the Defrag task in the same window.
Good Luck!!
Not quite... let me quote myself from a different question:
"RAM: Random Access Memory is what is used to keep your computer going when your running something big or multiple programs at once.

No, its the RAM that make your computer faster. RAM just lets you open more programs without freezing and the computer slowing down. You can buy more RAM. A hard drive just adds in more memory for more programs.
not but you can do thishttp://www.metacafe.com/watch/436426/mak...
