  • I have a tat on the inside of my wrist, the artist I used knows pressure points and I didn't feel a thing. My cousin had a scar on her leg that she got while trying to remove a tat at home. The tat turned out great. The artist first accentuated the scar and then used the scar to build the tat. now you can't even tell there was a scar there.

  • it'll be a little more sensitive over the scar. it's also harder for ink to retain on the part of the skin that's scarred (depending on how bad it is.) a good artist can usually make it look just as good as a tattoo not over a scar. usually though, small scars don't really harm much, it all depends.

i have a scar from a heart op going down my chest and i thought a tat would make it look cool! but then i wasn't trying to hide it, more like i wanted to accentuate it :-)
if u want to get rid of the scar, a much less painful way is using bio-oil

  • tattoos over scar tissue will hurt a bit more and the color will come out differently as well.

  • I'm also Irish... and I got a celtic cross mixed with a clover as my second tattoo, if you want to see it to get some ideas you can email me and I'll send it to you, but I got mine on my hip where I've had deep stretch marks ever since I went through puberty and it turned out great. Most of the time you will see the tattoo more than the scar- unless the scar is very raised and/or deep. It shouldn't hurt any more because of the scar- just know that tattoos hurt either way :) Just talk to your tattoo artist about possible designs that could cover it up better... but overall you should be fine!

  • I have a tat over a scar and it's totally fine. It did not hurt any worse either.

  • It is ok to get a tattoo over a scar and no it wont hurt as i have one. do try and find a good tattooist who knows what hes doing though gl

  • It kind of varies person to person. I've seen several tats that were done as a scar cover. If it's to cover some initals you carved into yourself i'm imagining that the scar is not that deep (not a raised bubbly scar). You should have no problem covering it up. I would ask the tattoo artist if they have experience covering a scar before hand and i'm sure they would not do it if they thought it wouldn't cover. A lot of people will say it's more tender going over the scar tissue, but a good way to tell is rub or push on your scar. If it's sensitive to touch then it will be more painful than a regular tat. If not then I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I don't know if it would hurt more or less because of as car - I have a 2" long scar on my forearm that actually has not feeling (I had a large chunk of skin removed for melanoma and I think nerves were damaged in the process). However, given that scars kind of have a different texture than skin, it may affect the ability to take a tattoo. Not really sure though. I do recall a while ago seeing a show on one of those discovery channels and a few women who had had mastectomies had their scars tattooed rather than have reconstructive surgery.

  • yes a tattoo hurts more over scar tissue.
