Trace the lines so that you know where the tail is going to end upon the joist then set the post back into place. Line the tail up with your reference points and then to hold it in place drive in a couple of long nails. Now you can secure it up with the lag screw through the tail into the rim joist.

Quite often the posts are notched out on the bottom so that a portion of the post sits on the deck. The notches are generally cut to the height of rim joist to a 2 depth. Cut along the sides using a circular saw with the blade set to a 2 cut.

Once the posts are secure you are ready to start assembling the rails. You will need to measure between the posts for the exact rail lengths. Cut them to the correct size and then put them into the correct location.

The spindles should not have more than a 4 inch gap. In fact in most areas thats what the building code reads. The spindles should be spaced no more than 5 inches off the center. Once youve cut the spindles to the right length nail them into the rails where you marked them to go.

When you have the rail section put together you can set it into place between your posts. Use an angle screw top and bottom to hold into place. Make sure everything is correctly lined up. Install al of the sections that you have completed.

You need to center the cap rail by leaving an overhang on each side. Make sure it measures the same on both sides.

Now you need to set the stair posts on the stairway. Secure them and then cut the tops to the correct height. Use your framing square to determine where the top of the posts need to be.

On the stairs it is much easier to install the spindles and rails if you do them one at a time. Once you have the rails in place mark the spindles location. You want the same span on the stair rails as you had on the deck rails so youll have to do a little math.

Cut the spindles to the proper length and with the correct angles so that they properly attach to the hand rail and bottom rail. Thats it you are almost done. All that you have left to do is your skirt board. Cut the boards to the right length and then fit them between the tails and nail them into place.

See putting up your deck railing doesnt have to be that hard after all.
