Generally speaking you will be installing more than one deck post but the same instructions apply for one or four. Expect it to take you about 30 minutes to install each post.
You will need a cordless drill, hammer, and a level. If you dont have a cordless drill you will need a screwdriver. This isnt a highly skilled task but you will need to be able to establish a vertical line using your level, often referred to as plumb. Before you install your posts you will have to remove the mason line which is sitting centered over your footings.
But before you remove it you should add an additional line so you can still easily align your posts. Whatever size post you are installing set the width at half of that from the existing line so a 4x4 post would have it set at 2.
1. You will need to cut your posts to the right size. Its a smart idea to leave yourself some extra which you can cut off later. This is especially true if this is a low deck where the finished height of the post is going to be maybe a couple of feet. The extra length makes it easier to plumb and brace the post. 2. Set and brace your post. You will repeat the same procedure on all of your posts. Weve cut the posts in the previous notes so now you need to gather to stakes and two braces.
3. Place your post in the post anchor and hold it nice and straight
4. while attaching the brace with one screw.
5. Drive each stake into the ground beside each brace.
6. Use your level to plumb two adjacent sides of the post. Attach the braces to the stakes. Its much easier if you have someone helping you. 7. Recheck the post for plumb and attach to the post anchor.
8. Screw through your anchor into the post.
9. Be careful when driving the fasteners in that you dont let the post slip out of plumb.
10. Now you can cut off the excess height on the post.
Of course its the same procedure for all of your posts. Not an overly complex task but one that requires a great deal of attention to detail so just like in school its time to pay attention.
