Rock collecting is a popular and easy hobby to enjoy. It also makes a great geological lesson for kids as well. While rocks can be frequently overlooked as insignificant items, they are in fact a fascinating and ever changing part of our environment. One of the most fascinating facts about rocks is that they continually change. Rocks frequently survive for long periods of time, in fact the oldest rock ever found is believed to be almost 4 billion years old. Despite that fact; however, rocks are continually affected by wind and water so much that they may bear little resemblance to their original state.

Rocks are not only an interesting and attractive object to collect, but their relationship with the Earth also provides much information about the Earth itself and the changing factors of our environment.

Individuals who are interested in collecting rocks should understand that there are basically three different types of rock groups. These groups are known as metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rocks. Geologists, and serious rock collectors, use several characteristics associated with these three groups to identify rocks.

Igneous rocks are formed when rock that has previously melted begins to cool and become a solid. Rocks that are buried deep within the surface of the Earth may melt when exposed to the high temperatures of the Earth’s core. The molten rock exits the core when volcanoes explode. Various types of igneous rocks are formed as a result of different cooling rates. Some of these different types of igneous rocks include basalt, granite, obsidian and andesite porphyry.

Contrary to igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks are formed at the actual surface of the Earth. This may occur either on land or in water. These rocks frequently contain minerals as well as various types of animal and/or plant material. Much can be learned about the history of a local area by studying sedimentary rocks. For example, if sedimentary rocks are found to be twisted or broken, this may indicate that there has been movement in the Earth’s surface.

When sedimentary or igneous rocks are affected by intense heat or pressure, they form a completely different type of rock; known as metamorphic rocks. These rocks begin to form deep within the crust of the Earth.

Rock collecting can be as simple or as formal as one wishes; however, the most formal and perhaps the best rock collections contain specimens that have been specifically labeled. In many cases, rock collecting can be a life long hobby. Individuals may find better specimens to replace less quality specimens and search for new specimens on a continual basis.

Usually rock collectors start by obtaining specimens from their local area. Eventually; however, most rock collectors find it necessary to branch out in order to enlarge their collection and contain better specimens. Typically, most rock collectors attempt to either collect as many different types of all rock groups as possible from a broad area or limit their collection to their local area.

Rock collecting does not necessarily require any specific tools in order to begin; however, it can be helpful to obtain a geology book and map which can assist in the identification process. These types of geological guides frequently contain descriptions of various types of rocks and photos to assist in identification. A small pick or hammer and a magnifying glass can also be helpful as well as a system for preserving and labeling additions to your collection.

Interesting rocks and specimens for collecting purposes can be found almost anywhere but some areas seem to contain more and better specimens than others. Sedimentary rocks can frequently be found in the interior planes and lowlands, while igneous and metamorphic rocks tend to be located in mountainous areas.
