we are living in an older apartment and the carpeting is pretty old and ugly looking. I was thinking of getting an area rug to hide it in the living room, but now I'm wondering if that'd look stupid? Advice?

I don't see why not. I saw something about this the other day on a tv decorating show. you can get fabric placemats or fabric napkins and dew then together to make a large inexpensive piece of what would be an expensive addition to your rooms
