Trouble transfering music

Published by: rose 2008-11-20

  • i've been trying to transfer my large, 40 gig, music collection to my modded xbox. when i try doing it through my network places i get an error message saying to check if the drive is full or right protected. when i use ftp some of the files transfer, but then the xbox freezes, and i lose the connection. if i turn the box off and back on the it reconnects, but i did that and it finished, but only 25 gigs transfered. the only time i can ever transfer by any means is when i first turn on the xbox and i'm in the xenium screen. what am i doing wrong? to be honest i'm not sure what i should have the network settings at. my xbox is wired directly to my dlink gaming router. should i try transferring one folder at a time instead of my music folder? its really frustrating, and any help would be much appreciated. i have searched for a similar topic, but have yet to find one.

  • i think i will go with streaming my music instead since i have so much, and it would be a lot easyer when i add music. i was going to do it for backup purposes also, but i can always put them on dvd. i always stock up when staples has 50 packs for $8 or $9. i already use streaming for video. it will also work better since i only have 95 gigs of free space and if i added my music and roms then i would have little left, around 20 gigs. thanks for the help! i was going nuts trying to do that.

  • yeah, just use the xbmc file manager.

    settings needed are correct network setup, ftp server enabled and auto fatx limiter in ftp settings. i highly recommend streaming your music if it's a plausible solution, much less hassle.

  • i understand. i would like to try and ftb it in xbmc instead of xenium. what should my settings be? i already have the the ftb server enabled. i'm also using filezlla on my pc.

    i'm cosidering just streaming my music, but i have some roms that i would like to store on my xbox since that is the only place that i'll be using them. i plan on backing them up on dvd anyways. can i just copy them on to my xbox fromthe dvds?

  • likely your problem is due to file names. the xbox filesystem is limited to 42 chars (including the dot and the extension), as well as limits on what those chars can be. this limit also applies to folder names.

    while xbmc has code to automatically truncate and replace illegal chars (settings->network->servers->enable fatx limits in ftp server (or something like that)), we get problems when we have to truncate folder names, since the ftp clients get confused.

    there are a few possible solutions. you could just stream your music (best).
    if that's not possible, you need to manually check for empty folder on your xbox.

    let me try to examplify.

    on your pc a you two songs, with paths as verylongname/track1.mp3 and illegalname/track2.mp3. since length(verylongname) > 42 it will be truncated to 42 chars. but when your ftp client tries to chdir verylongname, it won't find it and hence it's not able to store the files. so you have to manually chdir the truncated dir on the xbox and transfer track1.mp3 there.

    since illegalname has an illegal char, this char will be replace by a '_'. hence the ftp client gets confused again, and you have to manually transfer track2.mp3.

    hope this makes sense, hard to explain :)
