Each state has different rules. You might need to take a class/test, pay a fee, get a surety bond, buy a stamp, etc. The official Washington State info is below. I would think $100 to $200 would take care of everything, maybe less. I'm pretty sure you can go online to your local government and apply to become a notary. I think you have to take a class or seminar, but since that's a government-approved job, I'd check out the local government's site, or give them a call. If your job requires you to become a notary, then it's your employer who should pay for it! Becoming a notary is benefitting your company, not you, so you should in no way have to pay for that, if there are costs.
I don't know where you go to become one, but make sure your job is willing to pay for it if they want you to become one so bad.
