Exec Shuffle Under Way at IBM
Published by: jack 2008-11-22

IBM has plucked top talent from its server system unit to meet shifts in the high-tech market, thanks in part to the company's results in the recent quarter.

A company spokesperson confirmed in an e-mail today that former pSeries Unix server manager Adalio Sanchez will become the general manager of a new organization called Technology Collaboration Solutions (TCS).

Former zSeries General Manager Eric Clementi has been tapped to lead IBM's growing business transformation outsourcing (BTO) unit.

Sanchez, credited with reviving IBM's flagging pSeries Unix server business, will help customers redesign their R&D operations through a blend of microelectronics, technology development and manufacturing, engineering and technology services and intellectual property.

The company said these areas were all major drivers of growth for IBM in the last year.

For example, engineering and technology services grew 40 percent for the full year, while microelectronics sales grew 48 percent year-to-year.

"Under Adalio's leadership, we have an opportunity to accelerate our momentum in everything from consumer electronics to aerospace and defense by aligning these capabilities within a single organization," said Bill Zeitler, senior vice president of IBM's systems and technology group, in an internal note to employees.

IBM attributed recent deals with companies, such as Nortel, Mercury, Mayo Clinic and Honeywell, as a testament to the growth potential of this market.

Clementi will lead IBM's renewed BTO push, which saw signings jump more than 100 percent, thanks to recent engagements with Unilever and other companies.

BTO, which falls under the purview of IBM services, will leverage IBM's business performance transformation services strategy for tying consulting, business process, research and analytics skills together.

"Over the last few years, BTO has emerged as an important growth engine at the leading edge of our BPTS strategy," Zeitler said.

In other news, Jim Stallings, previously vice president of intellectual property and standards, will replace Clementi as zSeries general manager. Ross Mauri, previously the general manager of IBM's On Demand business, will replace Sanchez as general manager of the pSeries unit.

Kathy Hegmann, previously general manager of the BTO business, will take over as the general manager of IBM's Application Services Business. Rick Padinha has been appointed to the new position of vice president of delivery excellence within IBM's business consulting services.
